Montserrat natural park

montserrat natural park

The sanctuary of the Virgin Mary of Montserrat, has its historical origins in the hermitage of Santa Maria, which Count Guifré el Pelós gave to the Monastery of Ripoll in the year 888. In 1025, Oliba, Abbot of Ripoll and Bishop of Vic, founded a new monastery at the hermitage of Santa Maria de Montserrat. The little monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who contributed to the spread of stories of miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin.

The geological origins of the massif are sedimentary. The rocks of Montserrat, formed by pebbles bound together by a natural cement of sand and clay, are very hard and resistant to erosion. Nevertheless, the wind and rain have, over time, shaped the mountain to form “needles” or monolithic rocks with strange and varied forms. The popular imagination has seen human or animal shape in some of these peaks, giving them names and inventing legends to explain their fantastic origins.

The predominant vegetation on Montserrat is typically Mediterranean, particularly evergreen oak and laurustinus. However, the climatic differences found on the massif mean that we also find species typical of very dry places in proximity with other species, associated with cool, damp habitats. With a total of 1,250 different species, the vegetation found on the mountain of Montserrat ranges from oak, yew and pine woods to species that grow on the surface of rocks, such as borage and sunflowers.

As is to be expected in a Mediterranean zone, the fauna of Montserrat is also highly varied. The most common species here include woodpigeon, thrush and falcon, as well as squirrel, mountain goat, wild boar and salamander.

Garraf Natural Park

garraf park

El Garraf Natural Park and the Olèrdola County Park make up the southwest spur of what is known as the Catalan Coastal Mountain System, which extends over the counties of El Baix Llobregat, L´Alt Penedès and El Garraf. Its boundaries are the lower valley of the River Llobregat, the Mediterranean Sea and the Penedès depression. Together they cover 12,984 hectares (El Garraf covers 12,376 ha and Olèrdola 608 ha).

The two parks are made up predominantly of a rocky and rugged landscape, characterised by calcareous rock with a large number of cavities, dolines and sinkholes. El Garraf nevertheless has a small reddish sandstone strip at the eastern end of the park while the plain surrounding Olèrdola is covered with vineyards. The highest peaks in El Garraf are La Morella (594 m) and El Rascler (572 m). El Puig de l´Àliga (465 m) is the highest point on the central, rocky platform that characterises Olèrdola. These two areas are legally protected by special protection plans sponsored by Barcelona Provincial Council.

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park

garrotxa park

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park is composed by eleven municipalities. The mountain landscape, the sun and climate provide a variety of vegetation, often exuberant, with holm oaks, common oaks and beech trees of exceptional value to the landscape.

La Garrotxa is in the north of Catalonia, at the high basin of the river Fluvià, the Muga estuary and the Amer and Llémena river beds.

In this county you can see two totally different types of countryside. In a large part of the southern half there are more than 40 volcanoes and various lava flows, forming a gentle countryside without dramatic gradients, which is protected by La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. From the Fluvià river valley to the county's northern limits, the landscape changes dramatically, becoming more dramatic and steeper with an abundance of cliffs and gorges. This is the Alta Garrotxa, which is a declared area of natural interest (Espai d'Interès Natural).

This whole area, along with others such as the river Fluvià, forms part of the Natura 2000 Network, a European initiative to protect the most unique, diverse, rare, well conserved, representative, fragile or vulnerable natural spaces and which share with each other similar characteristics.

The climate of La Garrotxa is medium mountain Mediterranean. Rainfall is abundant throughout the year, and the winter is the driest season. The frequent showers keep summers cool, while the influence of the Pyrenees makes the winters very cold.

The vegetation reflects the climate. While in the Alta Garrotxa and the east of the county there is an area of typically Mediterranean vegetation, the rest of the county is covered with sub-mediterranean vegetation that becomes Atlantic in the most humid parts. Holm oaks are typical on the sunny hillsides of the eastern sector, with relatively dry and hot summers, the oak tree predominates in other parts, and the beech is found in the most humid sectors.  On the Olot plain, the most characteristic natural species is the common oak, although nowadays its presence is limited to small woods found around the city.
